BACKGROUND

In July 1925, the theory of evolution gained publicity during the Scopes trial in Dayton, TN. Teacher Michael Scopes was put on trial for teaching evolution in defiance of the Butler Act, forbidding the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools. The trial and worldwide publicity brought evolution to the forefront of thinking about the source of life and debating God's hand in creation.

During that summer of the trial, the most severe drought ever recorded came to the region. There was no measurable rainfall from May to September 20, 1925. For believers, that seemed to indicate God's displeasure at an attack on His power to create.
